Virtual Library Museum Pages:
a Distributed Directory of Online Museums
Virtual Library Museum Pages, probably
the most comprehensive metasite providing links to museums' Web pages worldwide,
has excellent browsing and searching capabilities. The numerous
special categories include children, libraries, photography, prints, architecture,
and computer related museums. The Overview feature provides vaulable information
on content and on how the site works. The site is maintained by Jonathan
Bowen and supported by the International Council of Museums. An excellent
resource for anyone with an interest in art!

The Dictionary of Art
The Dictionary of Art (Jane Turner,
ed., New York, Grove's Dictionaries, 1996) consists of 34 volumes
and is the most comprehensive and important source of art information published
in the last few decades. The 41,000 entries, written by approximately 6,700
scholars in their areas of expertise, include 15,000 reproductions and
300,000 bibliographic citations for further reference. The articles cover
biographies, archaeological sites, art history, terminology, techniques,
theory, mythological subjects, institutions and art movements.
Be sure to use the Index volume (v. 34), since it is important not to miss information that may be embedded in a larger entry. (Note: Institutions are listed by city.) The Dictionary of Art was acquired by a generous gift from the Monmouth University Library Association. (Reference N31 D5 1996)
