Carl Thomas Rowan (1925-2000)-American journalist, writer, and radio and
television commentator
"The Library is the temple of learning, and learning has liberated
more people than all the wars in history."
Last summer, mold was discovered throughout the periodicals
collection and in other selected areas of the book collection. While it
was easier to clean and maintain the climate control in the book
collection, the mold in the periodical collection was pervasive and the
area had to be isolated. The decision to withdraw paper titles was made
easier by the enormous growth in electronic publishing. Although many
bound volumes were selected for withdrawl, others will be retained
and professionally cleaned starting this month.
While no library wants a mold infestation, this event gave us an
opportunity to work with the faculty evaluating each title in the
collection for retention or withdrawl. It has also given the Library
the opportunity to expand its electronic periodical holdings.
