Administrative History

The liberal studies program at Monmouth University, one of the first in New Jersey, was founded in 1978. Established for students seeking alternatives to a more narrowly structured curriculum, the program employs an interdisciplinary approach to learning and research in the arts, the sciences, and humanities.

Monmouth's Master of Arts in Liberal Arts Program is supported by an advisory board consisting of six faculty members and two students enrolled in the Program. The board meets monthly throughout the academic year for the purposes of curriculum assessment, policy review, and planning.

Specifically, Monmouth's MALA Program offers two distinct curriculum tracks, Professional Studies and Liberal Studies. Each track posts a requirement of 33 credits.

Professional Studies is a career-oriented option, designed to help students develop knowledge and skills that transcend the requirements of the University's traditional graduate programs. Enrollees select two areas of interest on which to focus their course work. The Liberal Studies track emphasizes personal enrichment. It targets students who seek to broaden their horizons by exploring current scholarship across a variety of academic subjects and fields.
