Only my love of Emerson
makes me accept this
appalling miscarriage
of scholarship - a facsimile
in print of the Journals
with all the mistakes and
alternatives painstakingly
restored, to please other
scholars who need no longer
consult the mss - and to
baffle and irritate and
obstruct the reader who
wants only to know what
Emerson finally chose to
say. This is a prohibitive
price for the restoration of
the full text.
